A Christmas Story...

So, we went to the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond off of Kennedy near the Cracker Barrel and had a blast! We were able to take Larry(our Beagle and Ian's comfort/service dog) not only in the center but into the Cracker Barrel for lunch(I'll talk about that later). They had on display at the Welcome Center all the window displays from Macy's when they had the "A Christmas Story" 25th anniversary display...the Welcome Center bought a percentage of the movie rights and the displays and now it's a permanent display for every Christmas season. They also have a Santa waiting atop a "Cloud Mountain" for you to slide down after you've seen Santa and get a photo taken for only $5! That is CHEAP compared to the friggin' malls, no?

(Image of Ian pointing at the display from the scene in "A Christmas Story" where the old man got "a major award" and he's in the street commanding his wife to position it making it look like "the 4th of July" that glow of electric sex in the window)

Go see it! The exhibit is free...Santa is no longer there(obviously) but the exhibit will be up until January 10th...plus there's a John Dillinger museum as well. Check it out here, they'll have the exhibit up until January 10th!

Why is it.....

Kids always want what they can't have. Or shouldn't have? Is this just human nature? The lure of so-called "forbidden fruit," which if it IS human nature, this has been with us since the dawn of man...

...and woman.

Actually, I really just notice this attitude mainly with men and kids. Not so much with women. Probably because our lives are full of stuff we shouldn't have and don't want, how much more trouble it would be to have something we really want but CAN'T have....uh...in my regard...to hell with that noise.

My life is in such an uproar w/my autistic son, toddler daughter, co-dependant beagle and aging cocker spaniel(who will be 16 on December 23rd! She's in great shape...she just friggin' smells!), oh...and my high maintenance husband, who will be going on seasonal unemployment very soon...so WTF do I need more trouble?

For instance, my daughter makes it a point to let EVERYONE know how miserable she is if she doesn't get the toy Ian's playing with. When he's kind enough to relent and let her have it...she drops it...then runs after the dogs. Attention span of a sock, I tell ya....a clean sock...but a sock nonetheless.

I just find it amusing that when someone gets said possesion(IE, the one they shouldn't have? Keep up) after the initial and long enduring chase, they most likely will drop it, get tired of it and...move on to another possession they cannot nor should have.

I'm just saying....I'm finishing up the final touches on my term paper for psych class and this is actually one of the topics. It all goes into the "green eyed monster" category....I'll let you know what grade I got and maybe even post the paper...

...well, I'll post it if it's a good grade.

BTW....what are you doing to celebrate the holidays? We're going to hopefully see the "A Christmas Story" exhibit in Hammond, Indy, and go hit the Christkindlemarket here in Chicago....btw...aside from buying "stuff" you may really want and can't have, Christkindlemarket is free as is the "A Christmas Story" exhibit. It's only five dollars to see Santa and go down the slide over cloud mountain. Check out your local skating rinks, Lincoln Park Zoo, Navy Pier and the holiday CTA train....all freebies to do over the Christmas break w/your kiddies. A cheap thing to do w/the kiddies is to take the Metra over the weekend from one stop all the way to another....five bucks per adult for the ENTIRE weekend and kiddies are still gratis!

...what say you?

I love pumpkins!

I do! They're delicious! They're very pretty, they're very nutritious, fun to make crafts/pumpkin faces, etc.. with them.....in fact I wanted white pumpkins to make KISS faces but couldn't find decent looking good sized white pumpkins to do that(much less orange pumpkins as it seemed to have been a crap harvest for pumpkins this year). That's why I've not changed my counter and shall keep the pumpkins up, tracking all of your visits.

BTW...is anyone ready for Christmas? I didn't get the chance to put up tons of free things to do in Chicago for the Christmas holidays for everyone yet as I'm getting over a bad cold(not the H1N1 flu, thank God!), plus my autistic son is home for the holidays and will not go back to school until January 8th(uh...euw!) and my toddler is still teething! Bleeh! Anyway...I shall post that info soon! Hang tight, and hang up your ornaments, wreath, boughs of holly and lights....get into the spirit of things.

I do have a question: how do you feel about saying "Merry Christmas?" I am confounded at how an agnostic friend got his drawers in a bunch because of a poem a friend of mine sent re: not saying "Merry Christmas." He went on and on, droning on about the historical fact that Christ is NOT the reason for the season, how Christ wasn't born on December 25th, how the pagans/Druids were the ones who originated Christmas decor and customs, etc...and he wasn't very pleasant about it. I am very tolerant of other religions, have friends who are Jewish, Pagan, Muslim, Atheist and hardcore Bible thumping Christian...and the rule that applies to all of 'em is "I don't shove my beliefs down your throat, don't shove yours down mine." But he believes he's exempt from this.

Anyway...talk to you soon...wanna see if the Chicago Bears are actually going to beat the Green Bay Packers. Right now, score is 13/7 Green Bay and it's in the third quarter and ANYTHING can still happen...

Turkey leftovers?

Anyone got any great recipes for left over turkey? I have two I like:

One is a turkey cranberry wreath originated from a "Pampered Chef" party I attended years ago...still use it today. I also like to make turkey tacos. Dice up the turkey, warm up w/some salsa, put in a bit of cotija cheese to melt(cotija is Mexican Parm. cheese) and put in warmed flour tortillas.

What say you?

Hope yours was happy and fun!

OK, look! I'm not anti religious for God's sake I'm an ordained interfaith minister mainly of the Christian persuasion and I absolutely LOVE Christmas... BUT... I most certainly do have a problem when my favorite "holiday," aka Halloween is rudely interrupted by Christmas trees, lights, music, etc...since we've taken the kids(Rebecca and Ian and now those two plus Keira) to Sam's Club to 'trick or treat' for the past nine years, LAST year was the first time we had EVER heard/seen Christmas stuff up and roaring on Halloween. YES! You heard me; the shit was up on Halloween...It's kind of a buzz kill, ya know whatta mean? I mean, come on! The "supposed official" decorating/celebrating day for Christmas is/was the day after Turkey Day. I remember being so excited over Thanksgiving weekend getting all the Christmas crap out of the attic, putting up my mother's horrible off white Christmas tree(I say off white as it WAS white but my dad smoked two packs a day, so....) and decorating it and watching either the Wizard of Oz or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the background, feeling all happy, kid-like and holiday-ish...holiday-ish...like Spanish, Jewish, Druidish....Choo-ish...for Heather, btw....

Now I can understand everyone in the retail business wants to get a head start on this Christmas spending as we can attest. We, as a matter of fact participated slightly in Christmas shopping(and I refuse to say "holiday shopping" because it is the holiday season, yet I celebrate "Christmas," thank you very much...). I heard from several retailers they are not buying as much, IE, having a big inventory for this season as for the past few years they've been stuck with so much inventory they weren't able to get rid of half of it by the time they held their 60% off sales...which I found quite interesting not only for that "fact" but the "fact" that these retailers were revealing so much to me. Must be my reverend/pastoral persona/aura that made them just blab it out.

ain, I understand the commercialisation of Christmas, but does it really need to impede on my Halloween and Thanksgiving holidays? Do I have to suffer as my precious autumn, my favorite season, aka the season of the harvest(andseason of the witch according to Donovan), the season of cooling winds, the scents of burning wood in the crisp cool air and luscious colors of the leaves on trees have to be therefore erased.... in the spirit of Christmas?

And does Christmas commercialisation this early really make you want to Christmas shop? Or... take the kids to see Santa which we....{choke} did BUT my son really wanted to tell him what he wanted for Christmas early and we weren't making any hints of what we were getting him regarding his Christmas present and I really didn't want to do this but Ian insisted.... (whew...ya believe that, right?)...?

Uh...no.

Not me...

I don't want to decorate until the day after Thanksgiving, nor listen to Christmas music, nor watch Christmas shows. The funny thing? Christmas is shoved down our throats for so long before Christmas...Santa is in the malls by the end of Halloween..the decorations are up and door buster sales are a goin' on... but as soon as the day(Christmas) ends...? That's it! It's all over. The music, some decorations, and seemingly...the spirit....it's over. We, on the other hand continue it until King's Day, aka Olde Christmas, aka Epiphany. Well, the "commercial" part over, but the spirit of Christmas and Christ?

Alive, baby!

Alive and around...forever with us....And I promise we won't shove it down your throat with our without Christmas commercialization.

I heard a woman recently state, "we need to honor our troops and veterans before we get muddled with Christmas festivities."

How true it is, how TRUE it is......

HUGE ASS STROLLER RECALL!!!!!

Yes, apparently, the umbrella stroller made by Maclaren USA is recalling their strollers as they have a mechanism malfunction that may cut and/or cut off babies/toddlers fingertips. Uh...ouch? For more details, click on the link below:

There are variouis models involved, IE, more than one model is malfunctioning, so if you own a Maclaren Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller...then you must get in touch w/Maclaren ASAP. I hope they don't give you as hard a time as Walgreens did when I had to return this cleaning product which turned out to let out toxic fumes when used....the news on every station stated to return the item to the store of purchase and I almost got into a fist fight w/a worker there...but it also turns out this worker hates me and is in love with my husband....whatever. Anyway....get 'er done, y'all!

FREE THINGS TO DO IN THE CHICAGOLAND AREA DURING HALLOWEEN!!!

Well, mostly free. There's some listings that may
cost you some green but it's not much at all.

Yes, I found a few things you can do w/the family or w/your homies around and on Halloween. Aside from trick or treating and with the economy being as it is, it's nice to see that everyone isn't a greedy "F" word not taking you for all your moolah as you take your family for a great night out.

For families and adults who are "young at heart" or just plain ole' refuse to grow up:

Freaky Frights:

Yes, they're BAAAAAACK! After being shut down mid season last year due to cranky neighbors who didn't live anywhere near Forest and Cermak in North Riverside, they have returned! This is where two blocks of neighbors get together and decorate to the NINES for Halloween with fun and scary Halloween decor. They use robotic figures, there are hired actors dressed scarily to add ambiance; it's like walking around looking at Christmas lights, but all Halloween! Not quite for the faint hearted as you ramble along at nighttime just be forewarned you may have a vampire grabbing you...and not Edward from Twilight. There are portapotties and there is a snack stand(ala Tastee Freeze/Dairy Star) there for treats and I'm sure they'll have hot chocolate if it's cold. Located at the corner of Forest and Cermak in North Riverside and only on weekends at dusk. For more info check out the website at:

http://freaky-frights.com/

Morton Arboretum is having a reenactment of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." You'll hike up to various areas of the park and watch as actors reenact Washington Irving's classic novel. Just BYOB/C(bring your own blanket/chair to sit on whilst you see the performance).
Weekends at 3PM until Halloween weekend. Want the 411?

http://mortonarb.org//

Meson Sabika, the Spanish restaurant in Naperville is having a free Halloween party with goodies and activities for the kiddies from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM on Halloween....a nice alternative to those who don't want to take the kiddies trick or treating. Located at 1025 Aurora Avenue in Naperville. More info?

http://www.mesonsabika.com/

Navy Pier is having a Halloween exhibit but it do cost a pretty penny, however; they do have their fireworks display every Friday and Saturday night 9PM thru the entire month of October. More info needed for anything regarding Navy Pier?

http://www.navypier.com/

Garfield Conservatory located at 300 North Central Park in Chicago is having a "Creatures of the Night" exhibit which will show nocturnal animals and include other activities for Halloween. On Halloween day from 12-3PM. Get more info at:

http://www.garfield-conservatory.org/

Stuff for older kids/grown-ups or the over 21 "gotta hit a night club" crowd:

North Halsted Halloween Parade will go down on Halloween at 4PM at 3190 North Halsted.

The Roof at the Wit Hotel at 201 N. State Street is having a faux paparazzi/red carpet event. Fight off the paparazzi as you walk the red carpet into this quite cool bar/pub, etc...There is also a $1000 costume contest. Happening on Halloween, free admission but the drinks are not...

http://roofonthewit.therestaurantsatthewit.com/

Uncle Fatty's at 2833 N. Sheffield is having loads of Halloween fun; before and during Halloween itself. For more info:

http://www.unclefatty.com/

Also, to find out the trick or treating schedules of various Chicagoland area 'burbs, check out the Illinois Halloween website(which also lists priced Halloween activities and various haunted houses in the area).

http://www.hauntedillinois.com/

And last, but not least I MUST post info about this, despite it's not a freebie, it is an event put on by a friend of mine. Scott Jackson will have the Halloween Art Exhibit going on again for the 11th year in a row! For only a $5 donation you can view and purchase exquisite art work by various and incredibly talented artists(my sister Ary and good friend Charles are a couple of the featured artists) and participate in various activities related to the season of the witch. It's this weekend, October 16-17th from 8:30-11PM. They'll have DJ's spinning ghoulish hits and dancibles as well as a Thriller costume contest(ala Michael Jackson) and a Michael Jackson seance. Located at 1901 W. Belmont(at Wolcott).

More info?

Kidswinks have a website that lists things to do ...free or otherwise with your kiddies. Check them out below:

http://www.kidwinks.com/KidsEvents/Holidays/Halloween/

Whatever you do, have a fun and safe Halloween! If you can remember, post what you ended up doing on Halloween(or before, after, etc...) and if you can, share what images you have of your costumes! Joe is going to be either Jimi Hendrix or Indy again, Ian will be Buddy the Elf, Keira will be Maggie Simpson or a lady bug or a witch and I'll be Janis Joplin.

New "Girls Next Door" anyone?

I don't know about you fans of "Girls Next Door" but I am thoroughly disappointed in the new girls. One word: B-O-R-I-N-G. Dull as watching grass grow. I loved the former girls! They made me laugh! Did funny and sometimes dumb stuff but it was fun, and funny! They didn't appear to be superficial.....as the new girls. Maybe it's just me, but watching Holly w/Hef almost made me want to be a Hooter's Girl.....

What about you? What do YOU think of the new "Girls Next Door?" Post your comments!

How did that happen?

I noticed that as I get older, my face gets more...acne than I've ever had in my life, EVEN as a teenager. I was discussing this with several of my friends and it occurred to us; it's a hormonal issue basically. Acne is cause by hormones which is why as teeners we're covered in craters. Then with us getting our "moon time" and then breaking out....uh, yeah..more hormones. I know, stress too....can increase/cause acne as stress can mess you up re: your hormones..put them all out of whack. Experts are divided on whether stress creates acne or just worsens it, but it does increase the amount of oil your skin secretes, which can clog pores and cause breakouts. And lastly, the most hormonal experience of all; us ladies touching on menopause....well, uh, hello!

One way to tell if acne is stress-related is to be aware of when breakouts tend to occur, and examine your stress levels from the preceeding week. If breakouts tend to match up with the times that your body is feeling stressed, there is probably a link. (If, however, you always tend to get acne on specific spots like the right side of your chin or your left cheek, that could actually be due to environmental factors like your cell phone resting on your face as you talk.) Just drink more water, lay off the greasy foods, and try to relax...or chillax...it'll all be alright!

Anyone watch "The Girls Next Door?" I am not quite looking forward to the "new" adventures of the new girls. I really liked the former girls, especially Brigette, whom I think was the prettiest. I can relate to her in the sense that she's all about Halloween, my favie "holiday," in case you didn't know by now. Regarding the other former girls, Holly was the smartest(until she moved out of the mansion for not getting a "commitment" from Hef) and.... Kendra is the most annoying. Haaaaaaaaaa! I am NOT jealous, ya goofs. Kendra is annoying...cute, doesn't bat very well(per softball episode) and annoying....anyway.....watching this show made me want to find the book by former bunny and Hef honey Izabella St. James, who wrote memoirs of her two year experience at the mansion.

Reading the exerpt online almost makes me wish I were a single blond and living in the LA area.

I said almost. Not quite......

New episode of "Girls Next Door" w/the new girls airs this Sunday on E!.

So, it's decided re: Keira's Halloween costume. We'll be making her Maggie Simpson....Joe's request as he had a bit of a hissy when I said I was thinking of making her a chicken for Halloween. That would have been a warm costume...plus, I have tons of white boas, and to have her wear a long sleeved white onesie, orange and black striped tights and those feather boas, the only thing I would have made that may have been "labor intensive" would have been the comb of the chicken. I would have made it out of an old beanie cap of hers and just attached some sort of combage to it.

I just have to find blue PJs, and figure out how to make her headpiece. Should I use felt or fun foam and make it into a headband? Just wondering....what do YOU think?

Plus, if you happen upon a good pattern online or otherwise for a baby bonnet, let me know please!

BTW, how are your Halloween costume plans coming along? Let me know as well!

Anyone watch "America's Test Kitchen" on your local PBS station?

I am a HUGE foodie! I have Food Network on all the time, I am about to gain the balls to get some recipes together, tape it and send it in as an audition for "The Next Food Network Star" as I do think I have the chops to be the next Sunny or Rachael; I am always experimenting with recipes, deviating a bit from what was actually called for in a recipe then adding my own twist. In regard to baking you really can't do that as baking is...science. I mean, you can't remove baking soda and use baking powder because it just won't work. Now adding a bit of vanilla extract to something like that is different. I've experimented with box cake mix and added an extra egg especially in yellow cake mix and the cake comes out thicker, like a pound cake. I've also added lemon extract to said yellow cake mix and you'll get a remarkable lemon pound cake that you don't even have to frost!

So aside from Rachael's "30 Min. Meals" and Sunny's "Cooking for Real" I am a huge fan of PBS's "America's Test Kitchen."

I love how the host Chris Kimball from ATK literally tests everything in the kitchen, from methods and techniques of cooking to actual products; food or otherwise. Machines, pans and grinders have been tested, potato chips and olive oil, ways to remove rust from an iron skillet and the "actual" method to wash dishes was demonstrated. One of my favorite episodes was when coffee was tested and to be honest I was a former Dunkin Donuts junkie, but after ATK tested big name grocery store coffees(IE, Starbucks, Peets, Caribou, etc..) with one of the least favorites being Dunkin Donuts due to it having a sour taste to it, I am a changed woman. After that episode I noticed the foul and sour taste of the coffee and haven't had any since. The reasoning behind that is quakers were in the coffee beans.

Quakers, aside from being a religious order are actually underdeveloped beans that make their way into coffee while it's being roasted, manufactured, etc.... They're small and shrivled up dark bean and are usually picked out, thus explaining the high prices for Starbucks, Caribou, etc... which have very minimal amounts of quakers. Dunkin Donuts had a really high amount of residual quakers that weren't picked out, resulting in a sour tasting coffee.

Ever since that I have had issues with DD and haven't even had an iced coffee since recognizing this.

Great show, great tips, the website is great although a bit tricky and busy. I even enjoy the magazine which is a bit pricey but if you really want a great resource to your kitchen, cooking or otherwise, to me, it's a wise investment.

Check your local PBS listings for schedules.

So what are YOUR favorite cooking shows?

Aprica strollers....one of the WORSE strollers EVER made for city streets.

YUP! They are horrible! They're sharp looking, lightweight and convenient when you have to walk the baby in winter as the Calais Royale/Super Zap Prestige version(which we own and if you see the image, that is the exact one we have) has a mechanism where you can make the handle flip to the other side so baby is facing you and not the biting winds of Chicago. Along the lines of a carriage, or pram. It's also kinda cool in regard to when you fold it up it will stand upright without having to put the brakes on the wheels, or having to lean it against something, like the wall. Pretty cool actually.....

That's the only plus....

This is the flimsiest stroller I've ever used.

I have two umbrella strollers(which are actually sturdier than the Aprica if you can believe that!), a jogging stroller and a huge monstrosity of a stroller that has a cup holder and a huge basket at the bottom for carrying a diaper bag, purse, even the dog can fit in there. We call that one "the beast" as it's huge, it's clunky, it's awkward, but it's sturdy! The handle feels like I'm riding a Harley or something classic like that and I have no stress on my hand or arm(as I have chronic tendonitis). And it can hold my coffee cup no problem as it has a nice, deep and sturdy cup holder right at the top for me to grab my homemade lattes no matter what mug I use.
Well, obviously if I use the enormous ceramic mug it won't fit..duh. But...you get the idea.....
My baby can recline and snooze while I run about and manuever over the streets/sidewalks of Chicago effectively and not worry about disturbing her as there are shock absorbing springs atop each wheel. I don't worry about the stroller falling apart like I felt about the Aprica. The plastic on my Aprica Calais Royale feels so fragile I felt as if it was about to break after rolling over every crack on every sidewalk and over every curb; the wheels have those adjustable brakes that come undone constantly, leaving me in an uncontrollable mess; the mini basket at the bottom can barely carry a loaf of bread and is always coming undone with every single trip we make with the stroller. The handle is stressfull to my tendonitis and there is no cup holder.
And I cannot BELIEVE they sell this piece of garbage for over $200! I swear, ya just slap on a fancy name and state how it's made in Italy near the pope, you can dupe everyone.
And there isn't a cup holder either!
My only problems with the "beast" is it's quite heavy, it takes up too much trunk space in a car, and the shade is minimal, thus I have a bonnet on the baby's head on sunny days.
The "beast" is sturdy, reliable, fit both car seats well even though the second and much bigger car seat was a totally different brand name than the stroller. It has a dual handle where you can either use one hand (like a single handlebar) which is in the middle of the stroller or both for the classic stroller handle.
I got the "beast" free from a Freecycler. The "beast" is an Evenflo.
What kind of stroller do you have? Which stroller do you think is the best? Let me know....

Would you believe....

....that I own a copy of this book?
You're probably like "of course you own a copy of this book, Ana. Why wouldn't you?"
OK, then.
It's compiled by Bill Adler, illustrated by Ernest Marquez; it's a first edition from 1966; it's teeny tiny and a weird dark orange color hard cover with about 35 pages, it's adorable...it's hilarious! Basically, if you don't know what this is; it's a book that shows letters written by kids all over the USA who have written to the Beatles back in the heyday of "Beatlemania" making insane requests and commenting on the funniest things, suggesting the goofiest suggestions and just asking for the moon.
If you think kids say the darnest things...then you'll surely see some of the darned-est written by some of the darned-est kids in America! Some of the funniest stuff you will ever read, trust me.
The cover of the book has this letter from Sylvia from NYC:
"Dearest John:
I would like a lock of your hair. Also, a lock of hair from George, Paul and Ringo. You know you have plenty of hair, so you can spare one lock each for me.
With love,
Sylvia M.
NYC
PS: Please write the name of the person on each lock, so I will know who the lock of hair belongs to, as it is hard to tell when it is not on a person's head."
Yeah, that's going to happen.
Luvs Baby Builder. What would YOU look like as a Luvs Baby? Baby Yourself.

I love doing these things(IE, these little website thingies that let you build a Barbie, or a doll, or some sort of character that resembles you). Cracks me up!
Yeah, I know; get a life....etc...
Make your own baby at Luvs by clicking on the link above, and join Luvs online and get a couple of $2.50 off coupons on your next two purchases of Luvs diapers! Wooooooo, better than nothing, right?

Just above is my daughter's Luvs baby; hip and cool Keira...cute, no? Looks just like her! Yeah, really! Big round head, big ole' eyes, hair up like Ace Ventura pet detective...gray eyes...yup! My baby the cartoon....
I recently did a market research study on Luvs and all the other moms never used or knew of Luvs which I found interesting. They were all about Pampers and just didn't want to hear a thing about Luvs until the moderator presented us with a coupon for a free package of Luvs.

So now that I'm no longer breast-
feeding I can eat any-
thing I want, IE, garlic, broccoli, peppers, MORE chocolate, booze.....go on then! You name it! I can eat it! Cool thing is the baby can eat that stuff with me as well! Well, save the booze, she can eat pretty much anything...and will! She almost has an entire mouth full of choppers, with a molar or two on either side of her mouth to fill but she's already eating corn on the cob, like a pro, and loves it! She's just about 18 months now and wanting to crawl, run, walk, etc.. everywhere. I have the walker working full time and Cirque du Soleil baby loves to get up in her high chair and practically balance on one big toe reaching for the light, the remote, the dog, you name it. Aside from the usual IE, working with the kids, the old arsed dog(she's a 15 year old cocker spaniel) and goofball beagle, and my cranky ball and chain, same old same old. I am, however, about to work on my son's Halloween costume, which will be Buddy the Elf from the movie Elf w/Will Farrell(did I spell that correct?). That is Ian's favorite movie and he's always quoting from it. I have green felt galore and all I have to do is purchase a pattern or figure it out freehand, and buy a pair of girls white tights..nice and thick and dye them yellow. I will post images of the costume when I'm finished. I think Pinky will be a lady bug again, B&C will be Indiana Jones again and I will be Janis Joplin. It's been rough dealing w/Ian's transition from his old teacher who was with him since kindergarten to the new "special ed" teacher who doesn't seem to have a clue as to what to do with Ian. Not sure if I mentioned this but Ian has autism.

Anyway, we'll see how the year ends. Hopefully I'll be able to have more energy and I can get back to my clients with their costume needs and my other favorite thing; cooking and baking!

We went to Cantigny for the NWTA Revolutionary War reenactment, which is quite an event! Every year it seems to be getting bigger, and better! I have to see an even bigger event true to the era(IE, 18th century) in Southern Indiana called "Feast of the Hunters Moon" which I was told is the same thing as Cantigny, but better, and gynormous(as Buddy the Elf would say). I am so glad they moved this event(Cantigny) earlier in September as it used to be the second weekend of October where it can be quite cold, and rainy...and it usually is/was cold..and quite rainy. This past year it was the second weekend of September and it was gorgeous! 80 degrees, loads of sun, happy people everywhere including happy kid reenactors hanging around the small waterfall at the reenactment as you can see in this photo.
Speaking of festivals and whatnot, we were making plans to visit the Brazil Popcorn festival in Southern Indiana(near INDY) but it's this weekend and Bubba is on call, therefore, we cannot go. Alas, we're now making plans to visit a Renaissance Faire in Eastern Illinois. It's small and not too far(about 2 hours away from Chicago) and we can bring the dogs! It's at a KOA campground and it's next weekend. I am hoping it'll be somewhat warmer than usual or at least Indian Summer. Want info on the faire? Leave me a comment...

Happy autumn to you all and hope you're well! Off to watch a butchered version of "Analyze This" on AMC. Yup! Butchered. I don't care as I absolutely adore Harold Ramis!

What do you do when you lose a friendship? I know, it's silly to think all emotionally and whatnot as we're adults and need to "rise above it" and of course, we don't. It's almost like getting a divorce. I was friends with a young woman who was also involved with my son's education. We hung out, did things together, she helped out when I gave birth to my daughter...hell! I even made her my daughter's Godmother which she accepted gladly. She's getting married within a week and we're not invited despite we were told by her we were. She asked if we received the invite two months prior and we didn't; she told us she'd send another. We told her when school started we still didn't get the invites so she said she'd bring one and give it to my son; didn't happen. I reminded her three times this past week and since this shindig is in a week, we still don't have the info so we're not going. I have no idea when and where it is but I do have the impression that it's not happening IE, us going as she probably doesn't want us there in the first place, which is fine. One less major expense we can't afford anyway, but why all this leading on? That's what hurts me actually. If it were an issue to have us at the wedding, why tell us we're invited when we're not and not saying it's an issue to have...oh, I dunno; so many invited to the wedding, blah blah blah. This isn't the first "weird" thing that went down. For the past year every time we asked her to do things with us, come over, etc...she has some catastrophic occurrance go down, thus we're not able to get together. I don't want someone to feel obligated to be my friend. I don't want someone who isn't interested in a friendship with me and my family. Well, it's cool if it's not w/the entire family, but to at least tolerate us. It's just so sad she felt it necessary to lead me on, tell me she wanted to be with me, hang out, etc...then just blow me off. I'm a bit sad as I have to tell her I don't want the friendship anymore and have to make someone else my kids' Godmother. I can't have someone in my life who doesn't accept me for me and doesn't want to be with me. It's really sad when you give so much of yourself to someone, whether it's friendship or a more intimate relationship, and it ends up being a more a give/take deal than and somewhat equal relationship. I know people aren't perfect, but I don't want her to feel obligated to me. I have other friends, yes, but this still hurts.

I really like what this one blogger said in regard to a similar situation: "My advice to you would be to fill your life with people who WANT to be in your life. That way you are able to give and receive equally."
When I win the big payout for the lottery(being quite optimistic, btw) I intend to purchase the new Rock Band/Beatles version...along with either Wii or XBox. I don't know which system would be better. I'd like the exercise games Wii offers, but XBox has a better system from what I've heard from my friends

Betray-
ing our dead--

Forget-
ting the vows we made Eight years ago today, our homeland was attacked by fanatical Muslims inspired by Saudi Arabian bigotry.

Three thousand American citizens and residents died.

We resolved that we, the People, would never forget.

Then we forgot.

We've learned nothing. Instead of cracking down on Islamist extremism, we've excused it. Instead of killing terrorists, we free them. Instead of relentlessly hunting Islamist madmen, we seek to appease them. Instead of acknowledging that radical Islam is the problem, we elected a president who blames America, whose idea of freedom is the right for women to suffer in silence behind a veil -- and who counts among his mentors and friends those who damn our country or believe that our own government staged the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

Instead of insisting that freedom will not be infringed by terrorist threats, we censor works that might offend mass murderers. Radical Muslims around the world can indulge in viral lies about us, but we dare not even publish cartoons mocking them. Instead of protecting law-abiding Americans, we reject profiling to avoid offending terrorists. So we confiscate granny's shampoo at the airport because the half-empty container could hold 3.5 ounces of liquid.

Instead of insisting that Islamist hatred and religious apartheid have no place in our country, we permit the Saudis to continue funding mosques and madrassahs where hating Jews and Christians is preached as essential to Islam. Instead of confronting Saudi hate-mongers, our president bows down to the Saudi king. Instead of recognizing the Saudi-sponsored Wahhabi cult as the core of the problem, our president blames Israel. Instead of asking why Middle Eastern civilization has failed so abjectly, our president suggests that we're the failures. Instead of taking every effective measure to cull information from terrorists, the current administration threatens CIA agents with prosecution for keeping us safe.

Instead of proudly and promptly rebuilding on the site of the Twin Towers, we've committed ourselves to the hopeless, useless task of rebuilding Afghanistan. (Perhaps we should have built a mosque at Ground Zero -- the Saudis would've funded it.) Instead of taking a firm stand against Islamist fanaticism, we've made a cult of negotiations -- as our enemies pursue nuclear weapons; sponsor terrorism; torture, imprison, rape and murder their own citizens -- and laugh at us.

Instead of insisting that Islam must become a religion of responsibility, our leaders in both parties continue to bleat that "Islam's a religion of peace," ignoring the curious absence of Baptist suicide bombers. Instead of requiring new immigrants to integrate into our society and conform to its public values, we encourage and subsidize anti-American, woman-hating, freedom-denying bigotry in the name of toleration.

Instead of pursuing our enemies to the ends of the earth, we help them sue us. We've dishonored our dead and whitewashed our enemies. A distinctly unholy alliance between fanatical Islamists abroad and a politically correct "elite" in the US has reduced 9/11 to the status of a non-event, a day for politicians to preen about how little they've done.

We've forgotten the shock and the patriotic fury Americans felt on that bright September morning eight years ago.

We've forgotten our identification with fellow citizens leaping from doomed skyscrapers.

We've forgotten the courage of airline passengers who would not surrender to terror.

We've forgotten the men and women who burned to death or suffocated in the Pentagon.

We've forgotten our promises, our vows, our commitments.

We've forgotten what we owe our dead and what we owe our children.

We've even forgotten who attacked us.

We have betrayed the memory of our dead. In doing so, we betrayed ourselves and our country. Our troops continue to fight -- when they're allowed to do so -- but our politicians have surrendered.

Are we willing to let the terrorists win?

I know, I KNOW! It's been so long...it's a drag...yeah..I know. You'd think I've been cured of my "blogitis" with the lack of actually posting on this blog. Schtupid Facebook! Yeah, I've been slightly addicted to Facebook and their games...especially Farmville.

Anyway...

This summer in Chicago has felt more like Autumn than anything. I believe we went out swimming three times total; and two of those times were here in the Chicagoland area at a local beach(well, Indiana actually). Would you believe there is a gorgeous little beach just 20 minutes from Chicago called "Wells Street Beach" on Miller Beach in Gary, IN? Don't let Gary scare ya; it's absolutely beautiful! There's a fee for parking but you get access to the beach until dusk, plus they have an adorable snack stand and the food is actually pretty good and not too expensive. Another reason we've been so tied up as it's back to school time(think Andy William's song, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" for parents! YEAHHHHH!) so we're all over the place looking for the best deals and buys for back to school supplies. I swear, I am armed to the teeth with my coupons and sales papers. Ian gets to use pens for the first time EVAH as he's now going into 4th grade...yay! Plus, baby Pinky has certainly kept me so busy with her teething and weaning off the boob...it's rough..but..we're getting on well!

Well, not too sure how many readers I've accumulated, but if you're in the Chicagoland area, have a free gyros! Click on the link below, follow directions and on September 1st, go claim yourself a freebie gyros!

PLUS....this Sunday there will be a Farmer's Market in Bridgeport! Can you believe it's not going to be another Mexican restaurant! OK, I do NOT want hate email as I am Mexican, so back off, you white people who get offended when someone makes a joke out of anything ethnic...I AM ethnic, so bite me! Anyway....this Farmer's Market will be Sunday(August 30th) 8AM til 12N at 35th and Wallace(next to the old police station). Go and support your local farmers and enjoy the harvestings of the season!

My son knows who the Grateful Dead is....

Really. He does! I too was quite surprised. So, we're at Target today and we're checking out the dollar section (my favorite section, FYI) when I came across a couple of cute items w/the Grateful Dead's dancing bears on them...one a keyring. I was going to get two but put one back when all of a sudden my son, Ian yells, "I want one please mom!" I told him "you don't need it. You don't even know who they are." "Who, mom?" he asks. "These guys? The dancing bear guys." I said, "read the keyring." "The Grateful Dead?" he replies, looking at the keyring. I then notice from the corner of my eye a woman was circling around, checking out the merchandise as well and probably waiting for Ian to answer correctly. "But who are the Grateful Dead," I asked. He replied without a single pause, "they played music at Woodstock." This woman let out a snort and laughed out loud and said "I guess you have to let him have the keyring, he answered you correctly." I was floored! I too cracked up, my silly boo. But then again, w/my obsession of Woodstock probably led him to answer the question correctly.
Let's see what he answers when I ask him what songs did they sing at Woodstock......

Hard to get started....

I have been taking way too long to get this going. I know, I know! I hear it constantly; "Get your blog back up! GET IT UP!" How kind of all of you...do I write that well? Is my "stuff" that compelling or are ya just buttering me up so you can ask for my secret recipes? Well, I am here and back. Blogspot is a new home for me so bear with me as I adjust to a new atmosphere.
I had some computer issues, dealings w/the kids especially since my 9 yr. old son Ian is home all day, wanting to eat all day as well keeps me a bit busy. Plus, just plain old hesitation and not wanting to change(chalk it up to old age, if you will) as I begin a new blog life here on Blogspot. I had used various sites which closed down on me leaving me lost and off to retrieve most of my musings and save them in some odd folder in the "my documents" section of my computer. I have blogged and been blogging for God knows how long. And how often, you ask? Sheesh...too often..to the point where my son has accused me of having "blogitis" on certain days at various times during said days. He is completely serious, of course as he points his finger and telling me I have to make him elevenses or "elevensies" for the third time that day. We also watch "Lord of the Rings" quite often.
Deviating from the topic slightly, I apologize.
I have so much to share and yak about so come back later. I need to post my review of the Woodstock Tribute Concert in Woodstock, IL this summer, I have to inform you of the best coffee houses in Chicago, why roadside corn on the cob is so much better than grocery store brand, the Walk for Autism outing, my problems with Schwan's(yes, the food delivery company) and Target's online services, the difference between Masterpiece Theater's and Emma Thompson's "Sense and Sensibility" and much more.
The summer isn't over yet a lot has happened to us....plus, I need to vent, so....

Story of an "unknown" soldier.....

OK, now here’s the story about that headstone. Back in late summer my kids, mother and I went to Resurrection Cemetery to pay respect to ...
